Day 1 |
Arrive in self-catering accommodation in Coill Trá, Ballinskelligs, in the afternoon/evening. Light meal/refreshments at Coill Trá that evening. Discussion on history and significance of Sceilig Mhichíl, one of only three UNESCO Heritage sites on the island of Ireland. |
Day 2 |
Light breakfast (advisable due to lengthy boat trip later). Travel by car to Portmagee (10 mins) to embark on ferry for Sceilig Tour c. 8.15 am. The boat journey takes about an hour, and we will have 2.5 hours on the Sceilig to explore and climb the 618 steps to the Monastery. We should be back in Portmagee c. 1.00 pm. We can partake of lunch and refreshment in one of the well-appointed hostelries in Portmagee and digest our experiences of the morning. We can take a tour of Ballinskelligs and Valencia Island later that evening or Sunday morning. Valencia is well worth a visit with highlights such as one of the great lighthouses of Ireland, a dinosaur track from 350 million years ago and of course Knightstown Village. Ballinskelligs boasts the monastery that the monks set up when they were forced to flee Sceilig Mhichíl and of course Kerry International Dark Sky Reserve. |
Day 3 |
